European Shrimp Mix Recipe

Simple, cheap fish food recipes for feeding your Malawi cichlids are easy to make and can be stored in the freezer. This is the european shrimp mix recipe provided by Ad Konings.

This European shrimp mix recipe comes recommended by many European breeders and fish keepers everywhere and it even appears in Ad Konings` book "Enjoying Cichlids". You should never suddenly change your cichlids food but instead introduce it slowly. Because of the high nutritional value of this recipe it is recommended that you do not feed it more than once a day.

List of Ingredients

2 LBS whole shrimp
2 LBS frozen peas
2 teaspoons of spirulina powder
100 gms gelatin or agar agar
10 drops of liquid vitamins for fish

Spirulina powder can be bought from any good health food shop and I prefer to use the vegetarian alternative to gelatin which is Agar Agar, I had to order mine over the internet. If you can not find liquid vitamins for fish then you can use liquid or tablet vitamins sold for small animals or birds.

Method

1. Thaw out the frozen peas and shrimps but leave them slightly frozen
2. Place them in a blender and blend them to a paste (depends how big your fish are)
3. Place the mixture in a bowl and add the spirulina powder and vitamins and stir well
4. Dissolve the gelatin or agar agar check for lumps which can be dangerous to small fish
5. Slowly add the shrimp-pea mix to the warm gelatin mix it completely before it cools
6. Pour the mixture onto a backing tray or into small ice cube trays and leave in the fridge to cool
7. Cut hardened mixture into pieces and freeze in zip lock bags

Alternative Shrimp Mix Recipe - Provided by a member of M.C.H

Shrimps, mussels, squid, pear, broccoli, spirulina commercial food, human consumption purposed multi-vitamin capsules, all mashed into pulp, mixed with gelatin dissolved in hot water and poured into ice cube molds, and put in the freezer.

"This ice cube form is rather important IME. If you try to cast the gelatin in a slate like form, you will have a hard time breaking a piece the size you wish later."
